Its unique natural environment and its moderate climate are Taitung’s greatest assets. While the land nurtures rich biological diversity, the Pacific Ocean brings an abundance of fish to the east coast thanks to the warm Kuroshio current. The best rice in all of Taiwan is grown in plains between the mountains. Tea leaves, daylily flowers, sugar apples, navel oranges, valencia oranges, roselle flowers, pineapples, red quinoa, and other quality agricultural products are all cultivated in Taitung. The red soil of Chulu combined with the plentiful rain carried by the northeast monsoon season provides optimal conditions for plant growth.
Snowflake-like plum blossoms bloom during Taitung’s winter, from December to February; the best place for appreciating the flowers in in Luanshan Village. The Taimali area, on the other hand, is the largest producer of sugar apples, daylily flowers, and roselle. Sugar apples are delicious and in season from July to August and from November to February.
During the daylily flower blossom season from August to September, a sea of golden flowers blossom in the mountains at elevations of 1124 meters and higher. The stunning scenery is enhanced as the sun shines across all the flowers. In November, blooming roselles make Taimali colorful and beautiful.
Qingshui Nongchang in Guanshan Township is another popular attraction in Taitung. It is a leisure farm reconstructed from an old rice factory and a warehouse. The Farmers’ Association renamed it as the “Guanshan Rice School.” Visitors to the “school” can learn everything about rice and experience the process of rice production, from seed to table. Visitors can try different rice products and purchase edible gifts and souvenirs to take home. The Farmers’ Association offers a variety of other casual farming experiences as well, including laying rice seedlings, picking fruits and vegetables, gathering honey, and other activities. Tourists are encouraged to speak with the association for more information.
